my best guess is that its like with neuroleptics/tranquilizers/antipsychotics: the big deal isn't dosage, it's cumulative expsoure.
Low dose, but long treatment=more overall drug, which ideally should=slower taper.
That's my wild *ss guess on the matter. There's also the psychological aspect of withdrawing from drugs, and SSRIs are sort of emotional novocaine, so there may be some upheaval, emotionally.
The orthomolecular and other alternative health people swear by supplements. I do my own DIY orthomolecular, and it helps, but I still need the psych drugs. Maybe you should check out the alternative health people and see what you think.
