Metformin XR doesn't have any advantages over standard metformin in terms of efficacy, but it does seem to cause slightly less gastrointestinal distress.

The usual maximum dose of metformin is 2000mg per day but up to 3000mg is not uncommon (at least in the UK). High doses cannot be used unless kidney function is clearly normal.
