Is this right?
I was not in a position to read the literature around 1970, but my impression from my doctor was that benzos were the best thing since sliced bread, or at least compared to the barbiturates, which, oddly, seems to have been the same thing.
On the NHS you got 50 with a repeat.
At that time it was said to be just a question of psychological dependence (whatever that is, I guess that is what weedy neurotics do). Back then we were much more optimistic (or at least he was...a lot of free samples and stuff). Many of us, anyway.
