I read an article years ago by Dr William Seargent, who was more or less the leader of British psychiatry in the 60's and 70's, he said that in WWII, when he was an army psychiatrist, he had great sucsess in preventing what was then called battle neurosis, which I assume is what we now call PTSD, by giving soldiers large amounts of barbiturates for a week or so after a traumatic event.

I wonder if it might be helpful for field medics to have a supply of a relatively high dose benzo (say Ativan or Xanax 2mg three times a day for a week)to dish out to soldiers in the days after a traumatic event..... as sort of a band aid for the mind

I realise WWII was a long time ago, but it might be worth looking into.
