Interesting that you mentioned opiates. I had a doc who became willing to try vicodin with me. Because I am prone to abuse things that make me feel good, I already knew that vicodin had great potential for getting me out of the muck and mire. I took the scrip and was thrilled.
Then I looked down the road and saw myself "needing" more and more of it, abusing it, not being able to drive, etc. and figured I had better come clean with the doc.Oddly, a few years later I entered a "recovery program" for another drug entirely, and the first thing that the over-worked, underpaid psychiatrist wanted to do was to put me on suboxone! I could never figure that out, but I opted against it, figuring I didn't need more trouble with one more drug.
I feel that there is a place for opiates in treating depression, but I can't see it working long-term or with those of us who finally admit that we are total addicts.
Having said that, another good medication for me was nardil --until the side effects were worse than the depresssion.
Other top 3:lamictal/SSRI combo (till it poops out, which it always does for me
Abilify , 5 mgs. Unfortunately, I got akathesia with this baby. I am trying it again at 2 mgs with fingers crossed.
Aerobic exercise. I don't do it enough, but I know it makes me feel better.
Part of the problem with long-term depression, I think, is that we become accustomed to lying in bed or watching TV and we really (OK when I say we I should say "I" don't want to or feel we are unable to change the habits we cultivate in the "depression lifestyle".
