I get the impression that Provigil (modafinil) may offer some increase in mental energy and perhaps some mild mood brightening, but is not very robust as an antidepressant. A minority of people actually feel worse on Provigil. I had a horrible experience with it. I wouldn't give Provigil more than two weeks to begin working, even when augmenting it with a standard antidepressant.
Some people report experiencing a greater antidepressant effect from adrafinil than from its daughter dug, modafinil. Adrafinil is available in Europe.
Methylphenidate is more of a DA reuptake inhibitor than it is a DA releaser. With amphetamine, the opposite is true.
If one were to follow the advice of Sheldon Preskorn, MD, he would look more closely at Wellbutrin for DA reuptake inhibition.
Nomifensine and amineptine were putatively effective antidepressants that were available in Europe in the 1980's. Both drugs potently inhibited the reuptake of dopamine. Unfortunately, they were withdrawn from the market for various reasons.
The triple reuptake inhibitors have disappeared from the listings of investigational new drugs provided by Shawn Thomas:

Some see things as they are and ask why.
I dream of things that never were and ask why not.
