Are certain tap beers safe with MAOIs?

Posted by jms600 on May 15, 2011, at 16:00:14

I recently came across this study on the net -

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8151003

- which investigated hypertensive episodes associated with tap beer amongst people taking phenelzine. The study looked at 49 different bottled beers and 49 different tap beers.

It reported that of the 98 beers tested, only 4 were found to have dangerously high levels of tyramine - all of which were tap beers which were brewed using the bottom fermentation process, in other words, 'lager' type beers.

Would that mean that top fermented beers such as ale is safer - even when it's on tap?

I do want to try phenelzine as all else seems to have failed for my depression, GAD and panic disorder. Trouble is I don't want to give up alcohol - especially tap beers. I'm happy to cut down but I don't really want to give them up completely as it's one of the few pleasures I have left in life. I live in the UK and a hobby of mine is going to old pubs and trying different ales. I desperately hope I won't have to give that up.
