I don't remember seeing anyone use trazodone to augment other antidepressants in the hopes of producing a therapeutic synergy.
Trazodone is primarily an antagonist of 5-HT1a and 5-HT2a serotonin receptors (although it does inhibit its reuptake to an extent.
It might work. Perhaps your doctor has had a good experience with the combination. Other drugs to combine with Effexor include Wellbutrin, nortriptyline, and Remeron.
I tried high dosages of trazodone when it was first marketed in 1982. I didn't like the way I felt on it, and I did not experience an antidepressant effect. I have not tried nefazodone, though.
