I have no idea about whether or not alcohol will hinder your progress on an MAOI. However, when I was on an MAOI, my doctor gave me a complete list of foods and drinks I should not consume - and beer and wine were on that list (even non-alcoholic versions) because of the potential tyramine reaction. He actually said to me, "I hope you don't drink, but if you feel the urge, DO NOT DRINK BEER OR WINE. Drink vodka."
I would be much more worried about having a hypertensive crisis from drinking beer than I would be about alcohol reducing the effectiveness of Nardil.
