it really depends. I've always heard that usually you get tolerance to the sedative effects of a given dosage after 1-2 weeks of regular use, but the anti-anxiety effects usually last on, although some people on long-term treatment need periodic adjustments. But...I've also read that the benzos designed specifically for sleep are sometimes effective for 3-6 weeks of continuous use w/o the need for a dosage increase.
I think time will tell. 1mg of Ativan really isn't a lot, so I don't think it'd be that big a deal for your doc to bump the dose a little if needed. You could also try bumping the Ambien up to 20mgs/day and see how that works out.
