As for what to do about it, I'd nix either Xanax or Librium. I'm not sure any benzo is likely to help with the sort of symptoms you're describing.

More likely to be helpful, in my opinion, would be an effective anti-depressant AND a low dose anti-psychotic. It sounds as though you've tried APs in the past, but truly -- they can be very effective. I know someone who's had the best luck by taking Zyprexa three days in a row, once a month. That's all -- she takes it for the three days, sleeps great, by the third dose she doesn't feel as though she needs it for another month. A lot of what you described sounds like depression, rather than anxiety. Benzos aren't likely to help with that, and some can make it worse. Maybe an AD on the calming side, like Lexapro or Remeron, would help?
