I agree with gardenergirl...sounds like an allergic
reaction rather than a tyramine reaction. Here is a
link to a good[though detailed]article about
MAO inhibitors with a very good section about
foods and tyramine content:

http://www.tu.edu/user_files/10/19.html

IMHO, the 'classic' list of foods to avoid
while on MAOIs is too restrictive. I do avoid
aged cheeses, except for a 'taste' when they
are used in some recipe, and aged meats like
salami and pepperoni, along with 'deli' meats
that have been in the refrigerator longer than
a few days as they also 'age'/protein breaks
down while refrigerated. I do eat mozzarella
on pizza, and have never had a hypertensive
reaction[I used to test my BP when I started
eating pizza again]. But of course, pizza with
pepperoni is a no-no, along with anchovies and
parmesan and romano sprinkled on. You have to
ask each pizza place what they use in making
their pizzas because it varies.

I do avoid fermented soy products[miso, tamari, tempeh]; the 'real' soy sauces made in Japan are the most problematic, and
the LaChoy-type American made ones are not as bad
because they are not really fermented and contain
more coloring and salt than soy but don't go overboard with them either. You have to look on
labels of prepared foods for soy sauce content
too; a little won't be a problem but you have to
look for ALL the possible problem ingredients in
prepared foods. You could have blue cheese and soy sauce used in the same package of food for example.

My friends are used to my 'diet no-nos' by now
and let me know when a dish contains something
I shouldn't have and make sure the main course
is something I can eat with no problem.

Re Marmite and Vegemite...I'm with gardenergirl...
yuck! This is popular in England and Australia,
but it's an acquired taste[how?]. But this stuff
is PURE yeast extract while other prepared foods
use it in small amounts as a flavoring.

I've taken 70mg/day of Parnate[tranylcypromine]
for nine years and have never had a hypertensive
crisis. My psydoc asked me a few months ago[after
nine years!]if I ever 'experimented' with my
diet...I admitted I had; she wasn't freaked. Each
doctor has to keep up with the newer material
available on MAOI diets; a lot just hold to the
PDR list that's been around for 40 years.

Here's an even more recent tyramine/MAO article
[you have to be a bit technically-minded for
this one!]:
