Weaning off Diazepam

Posted by ronaldo on January 29, 2007, at 11:54:27

Hi

I have been taking Diazepam at 5 mg for the past month with enough pills left over to last me another month. I came by this Rx for 56 x 5 mg in the following way. I am coming off Olanzapine and I convinced my pdoc to let me have this Diazepam to help me to combat the rebound insomnia.

This is my second attempt at coming off Olanzapine. The first time I went cold turkey but the rebound insomnia was so horrendous I had to go back to 5 mg for one night and then taper from there. I got down to zero and held out for 3 weeks but again the rebound insomnia would not let me go and I went back on the Olanzapine at 10 mg.

This time I have taken 2 months to get from 10 mg down to 2.5 mg almost 1.25 mg. I have been taking 5 mg of Diazepam each night and have slept OK - not brilliant, just OK.

Now I want to know how difficult is it going to be to get off the 5 mg Diazepam. I will have been on it for 2 months. 5 mg is only a small dose. Do you think it will be easy for me to come off it? What kind of taper do you think will work best. I have just asked my GP for 50 x 2 mg Diazepam tablets. What is the best way to use them?

All advice gratefully received.

Regards

ronaldo
