Doctor Visit

Posted by blueberry1 on January 27, 2007, at 5:14:35

We need a hybrid board of both drugs and alternatives because this post involves both.

Doc took tests and says my serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine are very low. Glutamate is very high. Glycine and gaba are on the high end trying to fight glutamate. She says this balance of neuros describes my symptoms very accurately. Depression, nervousness, hyper acoustic arousal, easily fatigued.

Prescription for the moment. 15mg cymbalta. Magnesium oxide 400 3 per day. Melatonin 3mg bedtime. Xanax whenever I want (hardly ever). The mag and melatonin are to tame down the glutamate. Mag oxide, even though it is not absorbed as well as other versions, to avoid confusion with glycine, taurine, or other ingredients in the other versions.

The problem is I've tried all of these things before and each one of them made me more depressed! I wanted zoloft because in the past it worked fairly well, better than nothing, and it did so very quickly with few side effects. I thought the best thing to do would be to get me to that place on lessened depression and no anxiety and then begin work on targeted nutritional strategies after some stability had been reached.

I can't start all this stuff at once. If I get bad adverse reactions or seriously aggravated depression, I won't know what is doing what. So for the moment I'm working on the cymbalta. Started 1mg 1st day, 5mg 2nd day, working up to 15mg. She knows I'm sensitive and told me to do titrate this way.

My faith in this approach...zero. But everyone is telling me do what the doctor says.

Things are different now than they were when I tried these things before. So, who knows. We'll see.
