In our ahistoric and incurious world we can forget there are other times and other places. It may still be the case that in France half strength paregoric in 45ml bottles is OTC. The UK sells Collis Browne's Chlorodyne OTC, some of the time at least. Australia sold diamorphine OTC in restricted forms until 1968.
The world has not yet been brick and tiled.
