i know of no one with depression of any flavor, bipolar depression included, who is not already all too well aware that depression can, and sometimes does, hurt others.
no case can possibly be made that we who actually have the illness aren't the true -i.e., primary sufferers. this is what gets almost entirely lost in the commercial. it's nothing less than cruel - if not brutally sadisitic - toward us.
far as anyone feeling that their child or children are the only thing/s keeping them going, that will inevitably become a problem later, as children do grow up and leave home. not to offend; i've simply seen this offered up so often at NA meetings, when i still attended, as what was keepng someone clean. the longest i've seen this hold true is: 4 yrs.
it is us alone who must not lose sight of the necessity AND the gift we owe ourselves of moving (even if only trudgingly) forward - first and foremost - only for ourselves. not with selfishness, but with a healthy self-interest. no matter how depressed i've been (3 courses of ECTS should give a clue), i've somehow always had that at my core. that, plus simple stubbornness. these are what have kept me going. i don't know why i have these within me. i've had suicidal ideation often, but have never made a single attempt. i don't know why this is so either, but i feel extremely fortunate...in this.
it would be wonderful indeed! if - in a galaxy far, far away and many years in the future - family members chose to educate themselves in order to be of effective help to us, rather than the far more common 'choices' of either : 1) compulsive over-caretaking (otherwise known as nagging) OR 2) mind-boggling utter indifference. sadly, the reality i've seen both here and in forums too numerous to mention: post upon post of how often this is not the case. very sad; heartbreaking.
if somehow the cymbalta commercial makes even a tiny dent in this, i will be more than amazed. i will also be most grateful.
for me, the commercial is anything but profound. i stand by my original staement: it is a highly manipulative con job.
i loved the post about the dramatic tone. says it all so succinctly. also good: that cymbalta is THE 'cure,' and the only ad that has ever before managed pain.. (when the TCAs have for decades.)
i'm very sorry to those who have had success with cymbalta, as it will most likely be pulled. the only condolence i can offer is that this has happened to others re: other ads. i realize that is not much.

fyi: prozac by lilly was, until recently & after many yrs. of use (i can no longer tolerate it's GI side-effects) the very best ad of the newer generation ones....for me.
