I've had problems with anxiety off and on probably as long as I can remember (even as a child). I don't think i recognized it was anxiety though- I had serious irrational fears; thinking the ceilings of building would cave in on me as a child, that someone was going to come into my house and kidnap/murder me, etc..
A few times I recall shaking really badly as a child and not being able to control it.
I've had a handful of horrific full blown panic attacks; but for the most part, this last year my anxiety hit an all time high. The "non functioning" type of anxiety.
I tried Wellbutrin and Lexapro- neither worked for me, in fact, they made me worse.
Xanex helps with panic attacks but I realized I needed something daily to prevent the "cycle" in my head; horrible racing thoughts and all around general anxiety.
I wouldn't say I would wake up "scared" per se', more like I would wake up with either jumping jacks in my stomach or my chest. It was a very physical feeling (like I needed to RUN) and a very mental feeling (thoughts going 100 mph).
Anyway, I'm not on any other psych med right now other than the Klonopin. So far, I'm doing good on it.I'm struggling at the moment because of an event with a friend from my church; I had to take her to be admitted to the psych ward that I myself was in, I think that has "rehashed" some old reminders for me..
I'm sure I'll recoop.
