she sounds pissed off. If you're going to medicate in this situation--which may or may not be appropriate-- you'll probably want to focus on helping her calm down without **dumbing** her down. so...my guess would be medicate like its mild bipolar (as-needed sleeping pills, as-needed anti-anxiety, low-dose mood-stabilizer, like keppra or trileptal...I'd avoid using antidepressants, neuroleptics, or high-dose or hardcore mood-stabilizers). When and if she cools off, then would be the time for some sort of psychosocial intervention--therapy, support group, *SOMETHNG*-- to make her less miserable (and when that happens, people around her will be less miserable). Its impossible to say what exactly is going on with her--it sounds mostly likely a stressful life, mixed with maladaptive behaviors, **maybe** an underlying problem, like mild bipolar (some bipolar IIs have "anger attacks") or a more agitated sort of depression. Schizophrenia and schizoaffective sound a little bit extreme. As for her marriage...I dont really know what to tell you there. Marriage makes some people crazy, and so does divorce. I guess the best way to go would be to help her re-gain a bit of self-control, so she can step back, *sses her options, and go from there. But...this is just a wild guess on my part. If she went to a shrink, she might be DX'd borderline...I think thats a pretty sexist diagnosis myself (80% of people so diagnosed are female), and it kind of overlaps with the old-school concept of "hysteria"...its not so much a diagnosis as it is a condemnation of behavior that some find inappropriate for women. As for your mom's condemnation of your psychiatric treatment...hey, it happens. My parents went from telling me drugs were just "suppressing my feelings" to demanding I take my pills in their presence (that was when I decided to stop all medication). People believe whatever they want to believe, and whatever makes the most sense in the framework of how the view life and their other beliefs. What they believe and how they behave may change, but its usually not a sudden thing so...hopefully, if nothing else, your mom will calm down some and leave you alone.
