Lunesta might be right, but diagnosing biological and personality disorders is extremely difficult and requires much information that a professional would need time to accumulate. It sounds like it would be difficult to convince your mother to seek psychiatric help. Regardless of what her malady is, it does seem that intervention with medication would probably serve the purpose of reducing her stress level and allow her to think more clearly until a more definitive treatment plan can be implemented.
