The best example of this is the placebo effect. Where the belief in effect is stronger than the actual effect of the drug.

I also saw a TV special on monks who were able to significanly alter brainwave patterns, and inhibitory neurotransmission processes simply through meditation.

The mind has more ability than we give it recognition for.
