Nardil and hypomania

Be careful if you start feeling a “body” buzz from Nardil. Like other antidepressants, MAOI's can precipitate a manic or hypomanic state in some individuals. The first time I took phenelzine, when it started to kick in, I would get a pleasant sensation that is best described as a tingly feeling in the scalp. This was followed by an antidepressant-induced hypomania where I needed very little sleep and took some large financial gambles that, in the long run, set me back quite a ways. This feel good sensation was very intoxicating for someone that had a hard time getting out of bed while suffering from severe atypical depression. You should have someone close to you watch for these signs of mania. You may have a hard time seeing it in yourself, or interpret it as a positive event after being ill.

Afternoon drowsiness is a common side effect of phenelzine and will probably dissipate with time.
