Benzo's arent really that bad as they are put out to be, well, Xanax has bad controvery over it. Same to Valium.
Klonopin, in your case a low dose (.5mg) X 2 -3 daily may work. Klonopin seems to be the choice today for antianxiety med.
Regarding SSRI's i would recommenend Lexapro, it's designed to target depression and anxiety. Ask your doctor and he may give you Samples. Start out on 10 mg's.
