Celexa is a mixture of the two optical isomers of lexapro. Therefore, a 40mg dose is effectively 20mg of pure lexapro. I am currently on 40mg of lexapro (i.e. effectively 80mg of celexa). I posed this question vis-a-vis dosage to this forum some months ago and heard that 40mg lexapro is not too uncommon. Firstly, I'm surprised to hear that Celexa is still on the market, since lexapro is the "pure" form of the drug, if you will. Secondly, I would ask you doctor why he/she doesn't want to up the dosage. As I've noted on these pages, often the physician doesn't have significant experience with psych drugs and just doesn't know better. I went from 20 to 30 to 40 mg of lexapro over the past 1.5 years. I'm more or less maintaining at 40mg. I confess that I'm a chemistry professor, so the bit about optical purity above is solid.
Best,
Prof
