Many times the hormone serotonin is low in people with depression and many antidepressants help to get this hormone level up. I empathize with your problem with your boyfriend. Maybe he won't have to be on the antidepressant for good. If he would ever be able to lower his dose that may help too. I hope that he can get the problem worked out. But in the meantime, I would try to read some books on depression---maybe some on loving someone with a depressive illness.

I am a 36 year old male and I have been taking Celexa for over 1 year and I have the completely opposite sexual side effect which is an increased libido. My libido was high before taking the drug and now it is even higher. Of course my wife's libido decreased after having our daughter and has gotten worse with my onset of depression. I am very frustrated because I don't know what to do.
