I've taken both. Sonata doesn't last as long as Ambien (4? hours instead of 8? hours). This is fine as long as your problem is *getting* to sleep, and once you are asleep you can stay asleep OK. If you are waking up at 3 or 4AM and wishing you could get back to sleep, Sonata isn't going to help you but Ambien might. Sonata works better if you can't be sure to have the 7 - 8 hours that Ambien will keep you asleep (of course, in that case, you should rearrange your schedule so you can get enough sleep...).
