In short, there is no way to know if you're feeling better because of the medication or if you've successfully "worked things out".

If you decide to go off, be sure to taper very slowly. For example, if you're taking 10mg/day, I would get my handy-dandy pill cutter out and go down to 7.5mg for 5 days, 5mg for 5 days, 2.5mg for 5 days. This is just a very approximated suggestion. You really need to taper, but work with your doctor, perhaps telling him/her that you know of the need to work your way off gradually. Good luck.
