Luvox to mood stabilizer?

Posted by KaraS on July 9, 2004, at 20:51:16

I have a friend who was originally thought to have OCD along with severe depression (the latter as a result of the OCD). His doctors put him on SSRIs, most notably Luvox, and also entered him into an in-house program for treating the OCD. These were both making his thought disorder (and therefore his depression) worse to the point where he was eventually hospitalized. (His OCD does not include rituals - just obsessive worrying/thought disorder. Also, keep in mind that this is a guy in his mid-thirties who never had any problems in school or with depression until the last couple of years).

Anyway, because his condition was deteriorating with this treatment, his doctors got a consultation from an expert doctor in the field at Mass. General hospital in Boston. The doctor said that my friend had a type of ADHD - not OCD - and that's why the treatment they were giving him was making him worse. So they decided to wean him from the Luvox and put him on a mood stabilizer. I don't know which mood stabilizer. The last I knew he was starting to feel a little better. I don't know much about his kind of problem nor do I know anything about mood stabilizers but I am puzzled as to why they would put him on one of those. Does anyone here have any insight? Could a mood stabilizer help with withdrawal from Luvox? (I heard about his new medication from another mutual friend and it's also possible that this third party could have gotten the story wrong.)

I should be able to find out more about his condition next week but in the meantime I'd really like to have some more information so that I can give him some advice or recommend some things to read. Your help or experiences would be greatly appreciated!
