In reply to antidepressant for sexual dysfunction?, posted by AndiA on April 26, 2004, at 10:16:03

> Hi folks, I'm new here and this is my first post. I saw a medication advertised for women that claimed to treat sexual dysfunction due to hormonal events like childbirth, meopause, menstrual cycles, etc. I was wondering if anyone has heard of this (I don't remember it as being a hormone-replacement therapy, I think it was an antidepressant) because I can't find the advertisement or any related articles. I can't remember the name of it and I wanted to research it before asking my doctor about it. Had a baby last year and am dealing with some pretty serious postpartum depression, lack of sexual interest being a large part of it. TIA for any help.

The only conventional antidepressant I'm aware of that is actually pro-sexual is Wellbutrin (The MAOI Parnate also is, but I believe that is probably considerably more drastic than what you are looking for). Beyond that, there may be some efficacy in using dopamine agonists such as Mirapex or bromocriptine for what you are talking about, but the body of evidence for their use is much smaller than that of Wellbutrin, and they probably have more side effects.
