To the best of my knowledge, amineptine is nothing like MDMA. It does not:1. Promote the release of dopamine or norepinephrine - things that amphetamines do.
2. Promote the release of serotonin (5-HT), which is perhaps the most distinguishing property that separates MDMA and methamphetamine from the other relatively non-toxic psychostimulants.
Amineptine is probably stimulating for some people who take it. This is often a positive attribute when treating depression. Does this property lead to abuse? Probably, but it is not nearly as liable for abuse as amphetamines or benzodiazepines. Anyway, what difference does it make? Lots of really good medications are abused by people who are dedicated to abusing drugs. That is unfortunate. But that alone should not be sufficient reason to deny effective treatment to those who need it. I don't think I should be penalized by the "misbehavior" of others.
I am beginning to think that the major motivation for the withdrawal of amineptine was that it was being abused by athletes as a performance enhancer.
