OCD is considered an anxiety disorder. None of the literature I've read cites a specific cause, though many allude to a role for serotonin levels (being too low). Stress can exacerbate the problem. There's also a moderate genetic basis. It's said to vary over time, so it might recede on its own. Drug treatments (usually with SSRI's) typically require relatively high dosages for 2-3 months, so maybe an increase in your Lexapro regimen would help. I'm sure your doctor will have a suggested course.
