Respond to Psuedophed?

Posted by jay on August 24, 2003, at 17:30:17

I need some help with stims and such here folks. I am going to take a shot at asking my doctor to combine a stim with my Prozac/Clonazepam/Risperdal combo. (Would like to drop the Risperdal, increase Clonazepam..really...or goto higher doses of Xanax.)

I am not worried about diagnosis and having to have 'ADD' or whatever..because the bottom line is that stims can, and have, work(ed) as excellent antidepressants, if used properly. I rely on psuedophed not because of a psych concern, but for my sinus problems. It has been the "beneficial" off-label use that I noticed has lifted my haze of Prozac-depressing symptoms. (SSRI apathy, etc.) I seem to be losing my doctor when it comes to the so-called "addictive" meds (I know plenty about addiction...I worked as a drug rehab social worker for 10 years.

From my clinical experience, many people where able to go on and live good lives thanks to Ativan, Xanax, and yes the stims, as long as the meds where used properly, in a good treatment plan. ) Alertec(name here in Canada)/Provigil seems interesting, but I'd like to know a bit more about it's mechanism of action. If it is a pro-glutamate med like I have heard, I have a very high stroke risk in my family, and during a stroke your brain also releases tons of glutamate.

For me, AD + Stim +Benzo +AP seems like a good choice if I go about proper adjustments and such. I am also starting therapy in a few weeks, so I am also working hard on my inner self without drugs. I also excercise now routinely every day. After 12 years of mostly complete failures of meds...and now with a 10 percent or so increase in mental health...do I not deserve a shot at the 'big boy' meds? Well...I am going to bring research to my doctor on the topics, and then YET again, if nothing works out from that (i.e. get no change in meds) I will sign up with a clinician/psychopharmacologist at McMaster University/St. Josephs.

Can folks with stim experience, used for long periods of time (i.e. years) please comment. Thanks very much.

Jay
