If it worked for you for so long as a hypnotic, you are part of a very small minority. But since it did, you are lucky. I take Halcion for sleep, but I only need it about once a week, so I haven't built up a tolerance.
I don't know about Ashton's leanings, but that is just one source. The things she says about benzodiazepines as hypnotics are pretty non-controversial.
