My Effexor XR didn't stop working while I was taking it the first time, but after being off of it (and everything) for 6 months and starting to have suicidal thoughts again, my doc started me back on Effexor XR. (I was on 225 mgs too.) It didn't work at all that time, and I had major side effects - didn't tolerate it at all. That's when I started on my long journey of trying many different meds (and my journey of finding a new psychiatrist!).

Don't be afraid to try new meds, but it may take a while to find the right one(s).
