bipolar, but misdiagnosed as unipolar?

Posted by jralphc on May 1, 2003, at 11:52:00

After years of unsuccessful AD treatment, and some terrifying recent experiences with what I can only describe as compulsive and self-destructive behavior, I am beginning to wonder: Is it possible that I have some sort of bipolar disorder, and my ADs (Wellbutrin, supplemented with Adderall XR 20 mg) is aggravating a manic phase. Sometimes I have times when I have energy, stay up all night, spend compulsively, and indulge in drugs and sex, to excess. In the past I've attributed this to compulsive behavior, but maybe it is mania?

Much of the rest of the time I am tired and lethargic, melancholy, irritable and unproductive.

I haven't mentioned this to my p doc. I really do not want to take lithium and gain weight--I need to lose weight, not gain it, and Wellbutrin is good from that standpoint.

Do any of you have experience with drug-induced mania? Are there options other than lithium? I am scared, because I fear that I am hurting myself and the people that I love and who love me.
