Increasing MAOI tolerance - What are my options?

Posted by Minx on November 11, 2002, at 15:34:32

I am currently taking Parnate (MAOI) for atypical depression, and Mellaril to help my BPD. I have been on Parnate several times, and each time, I build up tolerance, until my doctors will not increase my dosage, and I have to be taken off of it for a year or so until my system clears out. This then puts me on the "pill of the month club" (as my friends and I so lovingly put it) - that wonderful merry-go-round of try this, try that wait two weeks, wait a month, try this again, try that other one...all the while living in hell because I don't respond to ANY SSRI's, nor Wellbutrin, and Effexor makes me too sick to even try.
I have heard about a new medication (antipschotic?) called Geodon; somebody told me that it has shown some promise with treatment resistant depression. Don't know if that's true...But it would be nice to just have to take one med instead of two (and I really miss my cheese & beef jerky). Has anybody here heard about it?
Any other suggestions for atypical, treatment-resistant depression? I like to be informed - it helps me and my doctor, and I can be a little more prepared for what could be coming down the road...
