Benadryl is diphenhydramine, an antihistamine that has been around for a long time and is available OTC. Cetirizine (Zyrtec) is prescription only (US anyways), it is also an antihistamine. It is the primary metabolite of hydroxyzine (Vistaril, Atarax), and has fewer side effects and longer duration of action than hydroxyzine. Hydroxyzine is used for agitation and anxiety, as well as pre-medication with anesthetics before surgery. I take Zyrtec (cetirizine), from time to time and it does have a calming effect. I was prescribed hydroxyzine (Vistaril) a long time ago and it was partially effective for anxiety (but not as good as a benzo).
