No. I think it's a good idea. (AA, despite its generally good intentions, is not the place to look for med advice. There *are* other self-help groups, although your access to them may depend on where you live.)
Tranxene, Librium, Serax, and lately Klonopin seem to be the preferred benzos for former/recovering/whatever-you-like-to-call-it alcoholics, FWIW; Xanax or Valium might be more likely to trigger you to want to drink (they have a reputation, possibly deserved, for being more "recreational" than other benzos). As a result, of course, asking specifically for Valium or Xanax has the potential to make your pdoc suspicious (if s/he is the suspicious type).
If you think your pdoc might be uncomfortable about prescribing you a benzo, you might bring it up as an alternative to naltrexone, say, and be willing to try naltrexone first even if you doubt it will help.
I think the Neurontin idea is a good one -- to me, Neurontin "felt" like a benzo (unfortunately it gave me the munchies too).
Good luck to you.
