I also have had GREAT response to Effexor XR. I started it in the hospital for suicidal thinking and acting. The Dr. put me on low doses and then quickly increased the dosage and also started me on Ritalin also. I was taking Rimeron at night to sleep. That was over a year ago and now I am off of the Ritalin and Rimeron. I had to go back on Ritalin for a short time when I seemed to slip back to some depression. It got me back on my feet again. I was having a hard time sleeping so my Dr. put me on Trazodone at night and now I sleep like a baby a dead baby, I do not even wake up at night anymore. I am n 300 mg a day of the Effexor XR and 200 mg of the Trazodone.
Some of the side effects at first were the headaches, dry mouth. After some time I realized I was gaining weight and that I was eating a lot. I have also missed a day here and there and that is holly hell. Missing a day is the worst thing, at least for me, my head hurts and the tingles are terrible along with being dizzy and just not with it, it seems I am on another plane and not in the real world. It sucks. I was starting to get a lot of the twitching when I try to sleep and that is when I could not sleep and the Dr. put me on the Trazodone. All in all I would recommend Effexor because it has put me and kept me on this earth. I asked my Dr. how long I would be taking these and he asked “How many bouts with depression have I had (already knowing the answer)? He said get used to it because the percentages of people who have had multiple bouts with depression let along major bouts have a 75-80% chance of having another one after going off medication and the bouts will get increasingly worst (and they have until the Effexor). I do not want to go back where I was.
