BSG - Low dose Effexor XR (37.5mg to 75mg per day) has been shown to work very well in some people with panic disorder. At this low dose withdrawl symptoms should not occur as readily.
Be forewarned, as with any serotonergic drug (eg low dose Effexor, the SSRIs or clomipramine) you may have an initial increase in panic attacks, but these do go away, usually within the first couple of weeks. Then you should notice the panic attacks happen more infrequently, as your body adjusts to the meds. Ask your doctor about this; it doesn't happen in everyone, but it does happen.
Many people have panic disorder for life and need to take meds for life. How long you need to stay on medications is based on your individual type of panic disorder. This is also something to talk to the doc about.
Hope this helps. - Cam
