Suzanne H. Elgin had several book on the topic of "The Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense". Linguist and author Deborah Tannen has several very good books on the issue and how in particular it is framed between men and women:
"You Just Don't Understand"(June 1991);
"Talking from 9 to 5 : Women and Men in the Workplace : Language, Sex, and Power", (September 1995);
"That's Not What I Meant : How Conversational Style Makes or Breaks Relationships" - (January 1991) and various others which you can find more info. on at Amazon.
Interestingly in what I considered very good marriages between very good communicators (professional communicators, folks who did it for a living and are excellent at it) the female in one case, and the male in another relationship told me how much D. Tannen's books rang true for them and their relationships. The first of Ms. Tannen's books was written after her marriage broke up, she went on to study linguistics and realized how much of her disagreements with her ex were based on the differing ways males and females often (but not always) communicate.

Sante!
