Remeron Weight Gain

I have been taking Remeron for about 4 weeks and have gained 12 pounds. I know this is a "normal" side effect. I also work out a lot and am wondering whether this is preventing more weight gain. My question is whether exercise and diet can counter the side effect, or is it a "done deal" no matter how hard you work out?
