> Do anti-psychotics increase the appetite, or do they have some other effect on hormones or metabolism? I recently started Risperdal. Now I'm wondering what to expect. I don't want the weight gain.

I was told by my doctor that antipsychotics have a double effect:
they both increase your appetite and slow down your metabolism. There also
is alink to a hormone called leptin that in research has been shown a correlation
with obesity. I wasn't on Respirdal long enough,
but when I was on it, I was so sluggish I could
barely move--I just shuffled my feet. It is
inconceivable that anyone could not gain weight.
In my case with that antipsychotic, I was not more
hungry, but just less active.
