The SR was brought out primarily because of the rare but dangerous side effect of seizures that happened in a small number of individuals at very high doses. In the pre-SR days I did a lot of halving and quartering of tablets - mostly because too much immediate release was anxiety-generating. I agree about the "smoother" descriptions.
