I felt depressed all day yesterday and snappy and then this morning the recovering gail is back. Same thing last month. Is it possible that a woman's cycle is stronger than a ssri? Am I nuts?

Gail -

From what I've read, the situation with depression
and cyclic mood disorders in women is more complex
than in most men. Hormones can have an enormous
impact (as you know!) on mood, and women have
alot going on in their bodies. Studies of bipolar
disorder and cyclothymia have shown that women
are more like to have the rapid-cycling forms of
these conditions and it is likely that it is linked
to monthly hormonal cycles.

It sounds to me that the SSRI is modifying - perhaps
even energizing - a baseline monthly shift in mood
which may not have little to do with the neural
systems affected by the SSRI. So it might not be
a matter of your period stomping the SSRI (although
it could be!!)

ANyway, there a host of other meds that p-docs
have used for cyclic moods, so if this doesn't
resolve on its own and it feels intolerable, it
might be worth exploring some other treatment
options with your doc. Good luck,

Sean.
