periods and celexa

Posted by gail on August 12, 1999, at 7:28:31

I've just had my 3rd cycle since being on Celexa. I have not felt so good in a long time. Except for the first and second day of my period. Meow. I am a raving bitch. I felt depressed all day yesterday and snappy and then this morning the recovering gail is back. Same thing last month. Is it possible that a woman's cycle is stronger than a ssri? Am I nuts?

Gail -

From what I've read, the situation with depression
and cyclic mood disorders in women is more complex
than in most men. Hormones can have an enormous
impact (as you know!) on mood, and women have
alot going on in their bodies. Studies of bipolar
disorder and cyclothymia have shown that women
are more like to have the rapid-cycling forms of
these conditions and it is likely that it is linked
to monthly hormonal cycles.

It sounds to me that the SSRI is modifying - perhaps
even energizing - a baseline monthly shift in mood
which may not have little to do with the neural
systems affected by the SSRI. So it might not be
a matter of your period stomping the SSRI (although
it could be!!)

ANyway, there a host of other meds that p-docs
have used for cyclic moods, so if this doesn't
resolve on its own and it feels intolerable, it
might be worth exploring some other treatment
options with your doc. Good luck,

Sean.

Gail,

I seriously doubt you're nuts... :-)

SSRI's have helped tremendously with my PMS, but
maybe you're just a major Alpha babe...not even
an SSRI can dominate your hormones. On the other
hand, I've had the experience where I feel a lot
of premenstrual tension and bitchiness before my
period, and then when I get it I feel very peaceful
and calm, kind of like "whew!".
I've had times where I DIDN'T get the peace when
my period came, and the PMS feeling continued...
This happened for about 2 cycles...
Looking back, I think it was my "soul" trying to
tell me something. I think sometimes I get like
this when I need time alone and I don't give it
to myself. I'm not sure what your lifestyle is
like (maybe you have kids or something else consuming
that dosen't allow much time alone)...but I found
taking that time for myself helped ease the symptoms
alot. I hope this isn't a totally impractical
suggestion for you, it's just what worked for me.
Personally, even though it's sometimes hard and it
sucks, I think PMS is a spiritual time--for me,it's like
a time where it's impossible to lie to myself
about the things that are really bothering me--I
see and feel really clearly and powerfully at this
time and sometimes that's not easy. I've found it's a good
time to really reflect on what might be missing in
my life, or what I may need that I'm not
getting. Maybe the Recovering Gail is starting to
feel more demanding of life (in a good way).
Hope you don't think I'm a total flake,
but there's my 2 cents. Roo

thank you so much for the imput. My husband called before he came home tonight to test the waters. I told him it was safe to come home. :-) 2 days into the period and i'm back to recovering gail. We have young children and time to myself is rare. I need to make a point of doing that especially during the cycle. I learn so much on this page and feel so grateful for the knowledge and help.

Gail,

I know it must be extremely difficult to get time
to yourself when you have young kids...
I wonder if you and your husband could arrange some
sort of schedule for those two days or so out of
the month, where you can go away totally by yourself
for an hour or so. Preferrably away from the house
altogether so interruption is impossible. Do something
peaceful, all alone. Just that one little thing
could help a lot...
Anyway, I hope you work something out...Roo

I too have been on Celexa for two months now. I thought that being on it would eliminate my PMS, an it has not. I am disappointed about that, when the PMS started I felt like I was failing at recovering from this depression. I have only had two cycles on this drug and it has helped me so much except for those days before my period. It made me wonder if I should be on a higher dose or not. I like the responses to this already thanks

PMS is the reason I take Celexa. (I had *severe* PMS.) And it's worked; my PMS is gone. But then again, I don't have depression. An interesting side note, the Celexa has no effect on me the two weeks after my period (I've found that it works best when taken daily). I've always wondered what AD's do to "normal" people. Perhaps nothing?
