Have a great long weekend, Babblers!

Posted by Partlycloudy on August 30, 2013, at 19:23:42

It usually gets a bit quiet on the boards during a break like this, but I will be checking them. If I can't give you an answer, I'll make something up...

Hi PC,

Every weekend is a long one for me. Here's my question that I need you to make up an answer for.

Why can't I get a job?

Because you are too good. Pretend you have half the education you do, make sure your résumé fits on a single page, and paper the universe with applications.

Or

Acknowledge that we are not out of this interminable depression/recession and the only reason companies are making profits is because they stopped hiring, in general.

Happy Labour Day!

Be careful what you leave behind in that pool...joking! I'm sorry you got food poisoning. I think it happens a lot more frequently than businesses let on. We are having our kitchen remodeled and not being able to cook has made for an unhappy PC. Lots of eating out, delivery, and poof! No snacks!

You take care and throw a chocolate bar in the swimming pool, like "Caddyshack".

I can't get a job either.

But then... Um... I'm not entirely sure that I want one.

Can you go back to school? That is my answer to everything... Not because it will result in a job, particularly. More because... Well... One sort of has to do something...

Thanks, PC.

I'll repeat to myself "I am too good to work there." Followed by "you'll regret not hiring me."

Hi Alex,

I agree that one has to sort of do something. I signed up for an animal first aid and CPR class, hoping that I can earn some money pet sitting until I get a full time job.

If you're not sure you want a job, then I say stay in school until you are ready. I've gone back to school twice and completed two certificates, so as said in Animal House "knowledge is good."

what about a degree? some do result in jobs... law. for instance. accounting. etc. even biology. if you are interested in animals... zoology. i don't know how things work with respect to student loans etc etc but could be something to think about.

By now, degrees are perquisites for even some entry level jobs.

I'd be screwed.

Things are hard. I think there are more applicants for positions than there used to be. You have extremes - those with advanced qualifications, those with lots of relevant job experience. Sometimes they are looking for one or the other (or in fact both) of those... Othertimes...

To be a kitchen hand you need to be a 3rd year student of a 'culinary arts' degree, wanting to do it for the work experience. That is the right blend of someone who is perhaps interested in the field enough to do a competent job at it (in the hope they get references / to work their way up) but not too good so as to make other people look bad (because half the students don't seem capable of turning up regularly etc).

I've been watching 'The Office' the UK series. Or, actually, I suffered through 3 episodes and I can't bear to watch it anymore. It isn't entertaining. It is too real. It makes me sick to my stomach. I wouldn't last a week in an environment such as that. I'd actually do my job which would make my colleagues feel bad about themselves... Or I'd learn to be a productive slacker e.g., by trying to work on my thesis or do some study... Then my colleagues would get curious about why I wasn't paying sufficient attention to them, and they would start to need to annoy me by throwing paper airplanes at me or disconnecting my computer from the power... And I would go postal and murder the lot of them within the month.

Clearly I won't be getting those kinds of jobs even if I apply for them.

I had a couple friends who had Masters / PhD's who spent a couple years looking for government employment (policy analyst / adviser type work). Mostly... They didn't get a look in. Then when they finally did get positions they learn that nobody really wanted to hire them because they were worried they would be 'too smart'... Then they spend the first year or two railing at the stupidity of the service they are working with (their bosses fortunately gave them 'extra work' projects to fix up those problems) before... Eventually... Their work picks up (becomes more interesting to them, the promotions come rolling along) and they say: That they came in thinking all these things needed to be changed... But really they just needed the couple years to learn how things worked...

There is an element of that. How much they need to babysit you to fit in. The right fit. The best fit. That is the trouble... Lots of applicants and they are trying to figure best fit. And because most people would be perfectly competent it comes down to the little sh*t like who is most likely to pick up the spirits of the sandwich girl who does the lunch rounds etc.

Who the f*ck knows what they want.

Hi Alex,

I do have a bachelor's degree in film and did work for along time in cable TV. At this point with a B.A. and a Visual and Print Communication certificate and Paralegal certificate I feel pretty much done with formal school.

Then again if somebody would pay for me to go to law school and promise to hire a junior associate who would be pushing 60...

My long weekend was nice. I went to Montreal and went to a beer festival near there with a couple of friends from my game. There are some really great people in this game!

In terms of work, I'm still in my HR position. Some of the applicants applying for minimum wage jobs have advanced degrees. A lot have a tons of experience but if they don't have experience working in the Western world, most places won't give them a chance...so they end up applying to work for us.

The sad thing is that due to the nature of the work, these people are not competitive enough to actually get hours at the minimum wage job we provide.

Average wages through the decades have not moved up. It's a sad state of affairs.
