Proud Papa

Posted by CamW on March 14, 2013, at 17:59:06

My daughter played Mae Peterson in her high school play last week (Bye Bye Birdie). Here is the review from our local weekly paper.

Check out the first two paragraphs in the second column.

I am SO proud of my little girl!

I love to hear that you are so proud of your daughter! She sounds like a budding star! What are her future plans?

Actually, she is going to a film school next year to ultimately get her masters degree in directing.

Last year she directed a play called Dogface, winning honourable mention at regionals in the province-wide One Acts Drama Festival. She was the only Grade 11 director to win an award.

This year she is directing a play written by a classmate called Child Killers. It has 2 performers; the female you discover is the protagonist's "feminine side". It is about the trials and tribulations of teenagers growing up in today's world.

Of a sadder note, the Cappies judges just released their reviews of Bye Bye Birdie, & Ana was only mentioned in one of five reviews. She is devastated. Really, she did do a wonderful job, the audience roared when she delivered her lines. Oh well, that's show business.

Cam I'd be so proud of her too. And what vision so young. I didn't know my *ss from a hole in the ground at that age.

So far I am mentally prepared for empty nest syndrome, but I don't think that my wife is.

Ana is moving to big city in another province, but she will be living with 3 other students in residence. The subway station is just outside of her apartment and stops at the school.

One of the girls that she will be living with is from her class. We, my family & classmate are flying out to have a tour of the school and living quarters in 2 weeks.

Starbucks is also transferring her to a store out there to work part-time, so she will be kept busy.

Ana is also living approximately 2 km from her "gunkles", that is "gay uncles", so they will keep an eye on her. My brother-in-law is a window designer in the city.

Ana is not a partier, so I do not have worries there. The crowd she hangs around with smokes a little weed, but drinks soft drinks. We have had a couple cast parties in our house. They are a little noisy, but all are geeks (in a good way).

Many of the girls that she hangs out with I have known since they were in kindergarten, and most were in Girl Guides with Ana. My wife was a leader for many years and was District Commisioner for 5 years; she also was honoured with a lifetime membership in Girl Guides. Ana earned her Canada Cord in Girl Guides, and was a Junior Leader for 4 years.

Ana will only be a phone call away, so I am not too worried about her.

Me too; I was living on my own and taking Pre-Med at a community college. All I had in my fridge was a bottle of ketchup, plastic bottle of lemon juice & a bottle of Tequila in the freezer.

I love it!!! I had a friend years ago(I still have friends)he was a gin guy and at the time was doing meth. I went to his apt one time and there were empty gin bottles and squeezed out limes everywhere.
When he wanted to eat he would go to the store and buy meat. That was his existence. Mine was about the same.

LOL. I had a KFC across the alley from my 2 room basement suite ($50/month) that would sell day-old cold buckets of chicken for $5. That was what I'd live on.

I was working evening shift as an aide (read as babysitter) at a institute for the severely mentally retarded (that's what it was called back then) & going to school during the day.

Ah, to be 17 years old, again. - Cam
