Anyone have their career disintegrate as a result of your illness? This has been the case for me.
Actually, my losing a job was the trigger for my current episode of depression. I was in a professional position, with some responsibility. I'm sure that is the case for many of us here.
My illness still has not resolved yet. I fear I may never return to the workforce. Will they accept me with a giant gap in my resume, filled only by volunteer work?
I am terrified to return to work and terrified I won't.

Yes it happened to me. Didn't ever return to work. And I loved being an RN. I blame the pdoc I had then as had a hospitalization and he didn't want the docs are the psych hospital to know he'd let me drink beer on benzos so he put me on Disability when it was easy to get on. No idea what he said was wrong with me. I truly hate him. Now I'd have to go back to school and already collecting SSRI as over 65 now. Uggg. I do feel your pain. I did volunteer for pets at first but the conditions of the pets there was afraid my own would catch something from me. Phillipa

>Roslynn your post really made me think as this has certainly been an issue for me in the past. I would try to stay positive and I know that is hard when you are having a major depressive or other type of mood episode. I want anyone reading this to know that even if you have mental health problems you can have a career and always recover and go on to even greater things. I remember having a set back in my career as a result of a very long episode of bipolar depression, and feeling like "well even if I recover from this I'll never achieve more than what I had prior to this "derailment" BUT I know from experience you can ALWAYS bounce back I work in the performing arts I've gone from severe episodes of bipolar/anxiety to back in gear somehow and in the end it has always worked out, I've had multiple hospitalizations but also multiple times have performed at Carnegie hall not trying to boast just want people to know don't EVER let a mental illness hold you back from success in ANY career. I don't even know how I did it looking back, but I just really wanted to go back to work and I tried to take care of myself as best I could, one instance even going from a 2 week hospitalization for depression and then not too long after to a very high stress engagement with what is considered one of the worlds finest symphony orchestras, I satisfied my job responsibilities in a professional manner, , and then that made me feel better and I was actually proud of my work for the first time in a very long time and it just gave me the confidence to move forward and do the best that I can. Please feel better and best of luck with your employment search. I would also be interested in hearing others experience on this topic. herpills

Thank you so much for your heartfelt post. I really appreciate your optimism. I especially liked your statement:
