Talking to one's self - normal or crazy?

Posted by Deneb on June 29, 2010, at 1:58:24

I talk to myself a lot. Often it is whispering under my breath, sometimes it is talking in a normal tone. My Dad caught me the other day.

I repeat things a lot. I would repeat some of the things I say several times. For a few hours I decided to write down everything I said to myself. Here is what I said:

"talk to myself", "talk to myself", "talk to myself" repeatedly

"stop talking to myself!"

"I talk to myself a lot"

"can't think of what I say"

"I don't really notice it"

"because I'm getting fat"

"no, I don't hear voices"

"cans and bottles"

"I want to eat food"

"Hmmmmm"

"Bob"

"spaghetti and meatball"

"gotta go"

"iced coffee, homestyle bun"

"Hmmmmm"

"getting fat"

"Dr. Bob, I love you Dr. Bob"

"I don't want to talk to you"

Those are some examples of the types of things I say to myself.

Is this normal? or Crazy?

Does anyone else do this? If so, what do you say out loud?

Normal.

I have no idea what I say. I don't pay that much attention. It's really convenient if there's a dog around, because I talk to them instead.

Most everyone I've ever lived with has spoken with themselves. I'll say "What?" and they'll say "Oh nothing. I was just talking to myself."

If you pay a lot of attention to it, or try to talk yourself out of doing it, you're just feeding the obsession.

Is there something you're trying not to think about right now? School perhaps? If so, you can thank your brain for trying to ease your anxiety with other worries? Out loud even. :) Then think about whether your brain is really doing you a favor. If there's nothing to be done about something you're anxious about, it might be helpful for your brain to distract you from thinking about it. But if there's something you need to do, your brain's efforts are well meaning but misguided.

Why shouldn't you talk to yourself? You're a person too. It may possibly mean that you feel the need in your life for someone to talk to. Or you might just enjoy your own company.

I say normal too.

I talk to myself a lot. Most of my friends now know to ignore me if I'm muttering fairly low. My "for others" voice is much louder than my "for myself" voice.

I talk a lot while shopping and driving, sometimes around the house.

Some examples:

"oh no"

"what?"

"I just did that"

"oh and how"

"stop it"

"great"

"I love her" -referring to Ada :-)

"let's see"

"what are you going to do about it?"

"oh no you don't"

That's all I can think of now. Those are pretty much the usuals. I also talk to my cat. It helps. I pretend her meows are actually english words.

I think it's because I played by myself a lot and daydreamed a lot that makes it seem natural to talk to myself. I usually had to say a lot of things in my head so my mom wouldn't hear me speak them. Now I can speak them. (if that makes sense?)

I didn't find anything you said unusual. Except now I'm craving spaghetti LOL :-)

I think perhaps I am a bit anxious about school starting. I'm worried about schizophrenia again. Must be my GAD acting up.

I think there might be something to that active imagination thing. I day dreamed tons when I was a child.

Thanks for showing me some of the things you say. I was worried there might be something wrong with talking to myself as if I were another person.
