A thought survey

Posted by linkadge on December 29, 2009, at 19:42:41

We all have different depression but what are we thinking when depressed?

What are the top 3 or 4 negative thought patterns that get you down when you are depressed?

Mine (right now) are:

1) My life is going nowhere
2) Feeling alone / iscolated / empty
3) Wanting things I can't have / jealousy
4) Feeling like a failure

Don't worry about consoling me, but what thoughts get you down?

1) I'll always feel this bad/never get any better
2) I'll always be alone
3) No one really likes me
4) Even if I do get better, I'll just crash again (I'll never have a normal life)

I will never find a long-term solution for my depression

I will never be functional enough again to live a normal life

I haven't met my potential and my life is passing me by

I won't have enough money to get by (quite worried about work situation right now)

When I have been severely depressed I feel that I am dead emotionally. That I have already died inside and am just waiting for my body to die as well. It's pretty horrific. Thank god for parnate.

1) How some people and one or two in particular humiliated and abused me. So many years and I seem unable to deal with it.
2) So many years of my life gone and so many things I've lost because of illness.
3) I was destined to suffer like this. There's no meaning to it - that's just the way life is sometimes.

Somewhere Dostoevsky says something along the lines of 'If a man has the power to humiliate another, he loses the capacity to be human', but I couldn't find it.

He's very good on humiliation though....I found

>It is not possible to eat me without insisting that I sing praises of my devourer?

>Power is given only to those who dare to lower themselves and pick it up. Only one thing matters, one thing; to be able to dare!

>Man is tormented by no greater anxiety than to find someone quickly to whom he can hand over that great gift of freedom with which the ill-fated creature is born.

and on a different tack, but I like it anyway

>The degree of civilization in a society can be judged by entering its prisons.

Linkadge, I laughed when I read this, because it's just about identical to the list of predominant worries I wrote in my journal yesterday. Just add to it

5) getting old, feeling not as attractive, worried brain doesn't work as well, fears for future health trouble

Let me join this thread:

1) How worthless/useless is this pain. I could be just living a normal life and engaging in things
2) Life is just phantasy. Why does it have to be a bad one instead of a good one?
3) I hate myself
4) Nobody likes me (including myself)
5) Loop from 1 to 4 forever

Ralph,

Is this how you're feeling now, or in the past? I thought the SJW was working for you.

Hi Jane,

I'm still trying to adjust the dosage (I'm in the low end / no benefit range now). I'll have to up the dosage back and solve the sleep issue - couldn't find the Magnesium Citrate :|

But I'm hanging on with SJW. Thanks for your concern.

How is your RR trial?

Ralph

Ralph,

Sorry to hear the lower dosage isn't effective. Did your sleep improve at all when taking less? Just curious since that would confirm that the SJW was indeed causing your insomnia.

If you can't find mag citrate, I think the chelated one you mentioned is probably OK. (Please see my last post to you back on the alt board. Don't know if you missed it.)

Thanks for asking about the RR. :-) It shows promise, but I'm still tweaking.

The problem with all this (for me) is that most things that help me wreck my sleep, which is no help at all long term, agomelatine being the exception.

Ralph, here's a thought I liked (Nietzche).....

>Glance into the world as though time were gone; and everything crooked will become straight to you.

That was my problem with rhodiola.......

Never slept properly on it, no matter how early I took it.

Other than that, very good.

How long did you use it? Were you taking anything else at the time? Amazingly, I am not having trouble sleeping on it (and I have a long history of insomnia), but the AD effect is not quite adequate. I think I might need to augment. Any suggestions would be appreciated, if you happen to have any, especially if you have insight on whether it's necessary to occasional take breaks while on it. I've seen mixed advice.

Jane,

Sleep did improve when lowering the dosage (like, two days later)... But then the AD effect was gone...

Sleep for me is a delicate subject. I feel that it has a major effect on my mood. Let's see what can be done. I wish I could use other natural preparations (Magnesium, Melatonin, etc). Herbs are somewhat out of question, as they seem to interact with SJW and disrupt sleep further (some of them are serotonergic and have MAOI activity).

Maybe tryptophan, who knows? Then I might lose the activating effect of SJW? I dunno.

Have a nice weekend

Sig,

The same thing happens with me. And it's very difficult to adjust sleep. I've been using Xanax for the last 4 years, but I decided to stop because I feared long term effects. Now I'm not sure what to take.

How did you cope with it?

I happen to really enjoy reading Nietzsche. One of his thoughts that I shared (to delimit pain) was this:

"The thought of suicide is a powerful solace: by means of it one gets through many a bad night" (Nietzsche)

And this concept is great:

"Amor Fati 'Love Your Fate', which is in fact your life" (Nietzsche)

Have a good weekend

At the time I gave myself a few good days taking deprenyl and rhodiola.

It just wrecked my sleep.

Here's a thought.....have you tried cordyceps?
It's down the same end of the pool as rhodiola. I like it and it wrecks my sleep too.

This is a new one to me. I just checked wikipedia and it looks like it has a hypoglycemic effect (in addition to AD properties). Rhodiola supposedly does too, and I do find myself even more hungry and irritable than usual when I wake up in the morning, and maybe even during the day (though I am of those who is constantly grazing so it's less noticeable during waking hours). This makes me think that adding the cordyceps might not be a good idea. Thanks for the suggestion, though. Let me know if you have others. There is so much out there, it's mind-boggling.

Ralph,

I just looked it up, and iherb ships orders to Brazil (I think it's only $4). They do have mag citrate. I don't know whether there would be additional charges for customs, but you could ask. I notice they have live chat now.

I hope you're able to figure this out soon since I know what a toll insomnia can take.

You have a great weekend too. :-)
